To mark International Flamenco Dance Day, C.P.D. Fortea took part in a report broadcast on Madrid Directo, on a very special day dedicated to paying tribute to one of our country’s great cultural heritages.

The celebration coincided with the 15th anniversary of Flamenco’s declaration as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and with the anniversary of the birth of Antonio Gades, a key figure in Spanish dance and Flamenco Dance.

During the event, C.P.D. Fortea students performed a piece by María Pagés, sponsored by the Antonio Gades Foundation. Through alegrías, martinetes, and tangos, and using shawls, canes, fans, and batas de cola, the future flamenco dancers showed how each stage element can become an extension of the body and of artistic expression.

Virginia Domínguez, director of the conservatory, highlighted the importance of this celebration and the value it holds for the school to have the Antonio Gades Foundation as sponsor of one of its class cohorts, keeping the maestro’s legacy alive.

The report also highlighted the effort, vocation, and dedication of the students, who balance their dance training with their academic studies, as well as the essential role of live musicians, fundamental to understanding the codes of Flamenco Dance among guitar, cante, and dance.
