Flamenco Dance is not merely performed. It is lived.

Flamenco Dance is one of the most representative artistic expressions of Spanish culture. Although the earliest known examples date from the late eighteenth century, it is believed to have existed long before then. It emerged from the combination of flamenco singing, guitar and dance, developing as a performing art form that has evolved from intimate settings to the world’s great stages.

In the Professional Flamenco Dance Studies, students deepen their knowledge and understanding of the discipline through progressive training that combines technique, rhythm, musicality and interpretation. The aim is to develop an increasingly refined command of the body and the language of Flamenco Dance, as well as the ability to express emotion through movement, in close connection with flamenco singing and music.

Why Study Dance at a Conservatory?

Subjects

Flamenco Dance

Specific training in zapateado technique, arm placement, and the movement of the hands and head. Study of flamenco palos, rhythmic structures and styles, together with an introduction to improvisation in festive palos such as bulerías and tangos.

Spanish Dance

Technique, rhythm and style in Flamenco Dance, integrating Escuela Bolera and traditional dances. Work on choreography, zapateado and the use of castanets.

Study of Accompanying Flamenco Singing

History and origins of Flamenco Dance and flamenco singing. Study of the different styles as applied to dance, with the aim of integrating them into the creation of original choreography.

Study of Flamenco Guitar Accompaniment

Guitar techniques applied to dance, together with palmas accompaniment to the guitar, exploring rhythmic patterns and variations in intensity.

Classical Dance

Technical ballet vocabulary, body control, precision, memory and musicality. Includes specific pointe work and men’s technique.

Contemporary Dance

Body awareness, use of weight, breathing, and the connection between movement, space and emotion. Technique, improvisation and choreographic study.

Music

Musical language and its relationship with dance. Rhythmic awareness, coordination, artistic sensitivity, and basic vocal and instrumental practice.

History of Dance

The evolution of dance in relation to its historical, cultural and artistic context. Study of the principal styles and movements to support an informed interpretation of the repertoire.

Anatomy Applied to Dance

Functional understanding of the body in movement. Injury prevention, physical care and improved technical performance.

Teaching Methodology

What Are the Classes Like?

In Flamenco Dance, as a form of emotional expression, the development of each student’s individuality and sensitivity is essential. Training is approached holistically: every action and area of knowledge forms part of a greater whole, fostering autonomy and artistic and intellectual independence.

Technical Training

Body technique exercises focusing on the placement of the torso, arms, hands, head, hips and legs. This is followed by footwork technique, developing strength, heel control and musicality for zapateado.

Choreographic Work

Variations based on the flamenco palos studied in each year, progressively incorporating their different sections — letras, escobillas and falsetas — until the complete dance is formed.

Entrance Examination

What Does the Entrance Examination Assess?

The entrance examination assesses whether students have the physical, technical and artistic aptitude required to successfully undertake these studies. It evaluates not only technical level, but also the applicant’s potential.

Applicants must demonstrate mastery of the technical, artistic and theoretical content of the levels below the year they wish to enter.

At What Age Do Students Start?

Entry to Year 1 is usually around the age of 12, after completing Elementary Dance Studies or equivalent private training.

Compatibility with ESO and Bachillerato studies

Training takes place in the afternoon, allowing students to attend secondary school in the morning. This makes it possible to combine general academic education with specialised artistic training.
