He began his ballet studies at Víctor Ullate’s school, later joining his company, where he performed works choreographed by Víctor Ullate, Eduardo Lao, Hans van Manen, Maurice Béjart and George Balanchine, among others. In 1995, he was invited by Fernando Bujones to join Ballet Mediterráneo. He continued his international career as a soloist with the Pennsylvania Ballet, performing leading roles in ballets such as Diana and Actaeon, Coppélia and The Sleeping Beauty. In 1997, he joined the American Ballet Theatre, where he was appointed soloist the following year. Over seven years, he stood out in major productions such as La Bayadère, Swan Lake and Le Corsaire, working with renowned choreographers like Jerome Robbins, Stanton Welch and Mark Morris. His performing career culminated at the New York City Ballet, which he joined in 2003, being promoted to principal dancer in 2005. He has been awarded the Gold Medal at the Nureyev Competition in Bucharest (2006), the Benois de la Danse (Moscow, 2009), the Community of Madrid Culture Award (2010) and the Ministry of Culture’s National Dance Award (2016). In 2019, he was appointed director of the Compañía Nacional de Danza, a position he held until 2024. He is currently the artistic director of Veranos de la Villa in Madrid.
