He began his ballet studies at Víctor Ullate’s school, later joining his company, where he performed works choreographed by Víctor Ullate, Eduardo Lao, Hans van Manen, Maurice Béjart and George Balanchine, among others. In 1995, he was invited by Fernando Bujones to join Ballet Mediterráneo.

He continued his international career as a soloist with Pennsylvania Ballet, performing leading roles in ballets such as Diana and Actaeon, Coppélia and The Sleeping Beauty. In 1997, he joined American Ballet Theatre, where he was promoted to soloist the following year. Over the next seven years, he distinguished himself in major productions including La Bayadère, Swan Lake and Le Corsaire, working with renowned choreographers such as Jerome Robbins, Stanton Welch and Mark Morris.

His stage career culminated with New York City Ballet, which he joined in 2003 before being promoted to principal dancer in 2005.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal at the Nureyev Competition in Bucharest (2006), the Benois de la Danse Prize (Moscow, 2009), the Culture Award from the Community of Madrid (2010) and the National Dance Award from Spain’s Ministry of Culture (2016).

In 2019, he was appointed Director of the Compañía Nacional de Danza, a position he held until 2024. He is currently Artistic Director of Veranos de la Villa in Madrid.
